After trying for salmon Saturday decided to target rockfish on Sunday in Monterey. Went to one of my favorite places for rockfish and lingcod. Got a 20in Verm that weighed 4.5lbs and a ling that was probably 28in. Hopefully September salmon opener will be more eventful!

Congrats, nice verm!
Fancy lure you're using, what is it? It looks like a Nomad

Yeah it’s a nomad vertex max. I’ve been using the squidtrex for two years now and tried the 1 1/3oz vertrex for halibut last year and killed it. So I got a bigger size for rock fishing and am super happy with it.

I used the sardine and white one mostly for the vertrex. For the squidtrex any of them. I switched the trebles out for singles too. Super durable caught over 25 fish on them and still going.

Way to go! I'd like to see a clip of how you use the Nomad. Using new lures is always daunting because it feels like wasted time during my limited fishing trips if I don't know the technique I'm using will produce results.
Always on the prowl in my PA14, except for most days. Then I have to settle for dreaming.

I'm also curious about your method with this lure.

I like to fish them 3 different ways. 1. If there is a decent drift I like to just jig it off the bottom (they vibrate as you lift your rod tip up) then either let it fall with slack or keep the line tight and feel for bottom. 2. If the drift is too fast I set up a 3 way swivel with 12" leader for a weight and a 3ft leader with a clip for the lure. (For the squidtrex) Then I either troll 1.5-2mph or (Both vertrex and squidtrex) jig it with the drift. 3. I cast and retrieve it. Ill cast out let it sink to bottom reel 3-5 times let it hit bottom, then lift my rod tip up let it hit bottom, then reel 3-5 times again. I watched the nomad design youtube channel to see what the action was like and got some tips on how to fish the lures. Ive caught fish with the squidtrex just sitting in the rod holder. They are kind of expensive but they last a long time and get the job done. Even had the weight rip out of it one day but I was able to get it back in and it still works just fine.
Here is the link to nomads youtube video.

Sweet, thanks for this! Looks like a pretty cool lure, and clearly it catches fish. I'm gonna have to give this a shot!

Great catch and yes on a beautiful vermilion. One of the more sought after rockfish.

Thanks for the report and interesting lures.
