Very slow today for the Pacifica inshore fleet. From Aromas you might be better off going out of Moss or Del Monte.

Short:
Not a bite from a salmon after 7hrs on the water. Fish were in the mud, didn’t attempt to fish the low water column :smt009 Nice weather, mild swell. Attached a picture of probably over a hundred boats out at mulligan hill and beyond. Click the picture, see if you can  count them all.

Long:
Changed plans from Pacifica to Moss, shortened my truck commute for a long journey in the kayak. Stopped by moss landing liquors for some anchovies at 6:15am. After searching Saturday for trays, remembered how elaborate the corner store variety of takle is. Left the harbor around 6:30am. Headed west prepared for long journey to join the fleet. June gloom was in effect, but thankfully there wasn’t any dense fog. Visibility was good. Wind was blowing slightly on shore under 3-4mph. Swell was minimal 2-3’
Passed the mile buoy, then shorty after saw a whale breach. Tempting to stop and troll around there, as I’ve witnessed commercial boats in the past work the area. Decided to continue onward, my fishing time would be limited once the wind increased throughout the day. Half mile later a small fish and game boat stopped me. He checked my License and brief me on by catch regulations, if landed my primary target of salmon. The traffic out was minimal, most of the power boats had an early start. Made for a relaxing mission to the fleet, which I couldn’t even see in the distance from the jaws.
After about an hour of pedaling and 4miles, I found myself on the edge of the fleet-still a half mile from the main cluster. Dropped my transducer down, threw in a uv apex without a flasher and begun trolling south. I tried this for a good 45mins with no luck. Trying depth of 80-100’. Eventually tried multiple different looks: blue hoochi with flasher, crippled anchovy with flasher, and without. Trolled the middle and top column of water. Passed a few boats land fish, but didn’t seem like the bite was super hot unlike what I heard Saturday was. Most times on the radio it was a lot non sense humor going on-thus people were busy catching fish.
Eventually decided to begin trolling my back to the harbor by noon, my knees were beat. The surface texture was still pretty nice at this time.
Not even a scratch for me. I was surprised since there was too many boats to count, I thought I would indefinitely catch a nice fish.
Didn’t use my radio most of the time on the way out and while trolling, since it didn’t fully charge it(big mistake). Wanted to save it for any emergency. As I made my way back I eventually turned it on consistently for some laughs and listen to chatter going on. Lots of people were still fishing when I started heading back, I left the party early as I didn’t want to be in too choppy of conditions 4-5miles away from the harbor. Listened to more people catching fish with the tide shifting into low as on way back. Looked like a slow morning, didn’t witness people netting many fish. Not many boats were taking off back to the harbor early either. Fish were hugging the bottom 180-220’ imagine the fish were scattered and skittish after big opening Saturday, and tons of people concentrated on one area Sunday.
Changed to regular paddling set up to give my knees a break. Witnessed a couple more whales on my long way back in. Tempting to troll again, but knees wouldn’t allow it. Someone pick up a keeper halibut at the mile buoy. Also considered doing a drift since I had fresh squid in my back,  but winds were turning on aggressively at this point, and boat traffic was increasing. Made it back to the harbor by 1:30pm with no tragedies besides coming back empty handed. Got some good exercise and practice. Looking forward to fall season :smt010.
