My original comment was really to point out how great I think it already is.  Some of the "problems" like steelhead are what make it interesting.

If you get rid of steelies then everyone is just going to waste gas driving to Tahoe all summer.  Besides the Del Valle fish Mooch entered is right there in the hunt along with Freddie and Chucks Macs.  The gap between big trout and biggest other species is in the zone.  I know lots of folks are going to try steelie drifting this year, and thats what makes AOTY fun.  It gets you out of your rut and forces you to try different things.

I think halibut is fine too.  If everyone but Freddie failed to catch a nice one, then thats what seperates him as AOTY.  I was stoked to catch 3 halibut this year, unfortunately for me, they were all rats.  Doesn't mean I want to change the score.  It does mean I need to learn how to target bigger flatties.  If you change the points to reward little ones, and someone catchs a HUGE one it will really screw things up.

We wanted it to be competitive...it couldn't get any closer.  Personally, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

What I feel that we do need to fix is the measuring. There is some sorry measuring going on. I think something like the Hawg Trough that Shimmy uses should be mandatory for everything under 30".    For NCKAs promotional value, people should really do all 3 pics as well.  Pics on a tape (although the most crucial to points) just aren't pretty for general use.

Finally, I really don't want to add any species.  Trying to fill a card is hard enough as it is, I would love to leave some time for just plain old fishing.

Ya... but who wants to haul around a 38 inch board everywhere they go... needs to have a hinge so it can be stashed away reasonably well when not in use... unless you want us all to look like Freddie at Mendo with his big white fish board sticking up behind his seat.

Those are super cool.  It would be ez for most of us to carry one in the bottom of the tw, along the side, or in the front hatch.  How much are those?  We should require a Cajun Keeper too!

danglin, anyone who makes a living going in and out of burning buildings is got to be a little psyco. anyone who thinks you would intentionally mismeasure is either full of shit or they just don't know you.

That has nothing to do with it.  Nobody is accusing anyone of anything intentional or malicious.

A little history lesson.  AOTY used to be by weight.  People were unhappy with perceived differences in the accuracy of scales, so we went with length to make people happy.  Now the measuring, which should be simple and uniform, is all goofy because some of the tape shots are just plain lame.  We are looking for a way to bring more repeatability to measuring and that is all.

You must purchase at least 4 Kajun Keepers to get your fish measuring device!  :smt044

You don't need to get the giant one but at least get the 32" one. I will try to give them a call this week to check on price and if they have a hinged model.

Regarding proper measurements....how about showing a (pic) sample of what is considered "proper" and "not proper" ...this way, we are all in the same page, regardless of what measuring device we are all using.
