I have to be in San Diego on this coming Sunday, February 16, and was thinking about driving down a day or 2 early and camping. I saw that Lake Cuyamaca is about an hour away from where I need to be and camping sites are available there, but was wondering if anybody had other suggestions...

Green Valley Campground looks pretty sweet. Don't see much options any closer.

In Loving Memory of Mooch, Eelmaster, Shicken, and Cabeza De Martillo

I started kayak fishing to get away from most of you...

Rancho Cuayamaca is a great campground esp for tent camping (assuming you are tent camping?)

all of the county parks are also very nice
Dos Picos in Ramona
Guajome in Oceanside (really Vista imo)
here is a link to them all, imo they are better maintained than the state parks

There are also a couple campgrounds right on the coast. South Carlsbad and San Elijo St. Beach.  The campgrounds and facilities are not as nice...but you are literally on the coast.

I believe the Campland on Mission Bay also offers tent camping, it would be a little more $$$, but you're on the bay and the facilities are nice and clean - I've launched my kayak there a number of times.

I hope that helps,
Brian.

Thanks for the info.

I spent yesterday morning getting some medical tests done, after a weird episode of a rapid heartbeat over the weekend. Assuming they don't find anything, I plan to give one of these places a try...

Cuyamaca is pretty high up and inland so it will be a lot colder than the coastal options.

I noticed that--in the 40s at night. I think I can handle that, and it should not be too crowded...

This time of year, maybe some of the camping along the coast highway at the beaches may be open.   I think they are non reservations.
