Thanks all. Yeah the sabiki sounds fun. I just ordered some, along with a bait well I can attach to my boat.

I also got a 6 foot “easy throw” cast net to give that a shot

Now to get the second freezer to store everything I’m going to catch!

Side note - has anyone else spent hours on the internet researching and trying to buy different gear? I logged a couple of hours yesterday trying to find a USB rechargeable, 360 degree stern light / anchor light. I finally found one. I’ll post how it works later. But it feels like life isn’t supposed to be this hard….

There are so many options for gear these days you can buy for a kayak, specific tailored parts for pretty much everything you can bolt onto a boat.  But with a little ingenuity you can come up with your own solution too and maybe it will work out even better because you can make work the way you want.  For a 360 light I bought one of these: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0BS8LRXMX/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&th=1 and then mounted it upside down on a Piece of PVC attached to my crate.

You could attach it to something like this https://www.amazon.com/Gooseneck-Universal-Flexible-Bracket-4-0-6-3/dp/B07P2VK93P/ref=sr_1_6?crid=QGETH54EFGUN&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.Wa5zMSCI9Jr9ao9fX-qh7dvncDqikhdPX9ZLaY3ScVLl9ugN1-U5SjTb04wsyp09-aZljB0aNLt2K7jmf3CFF_q-6QgPWqDVGQFIB8sV-L6-n0LX6apKA652UkPFR3S0JJ2KepSgI2feNx9F0Pmeb066I_cz-kPVGhg_1QEu80xZnZVShUBOXCkZLqykmnRhuWz1i-bzch-RzFiOifEgt-GDuHKim17vrdRl9XxKzrNFAuhBWR92hWH-Ph7sTsO1wlamqIbitALU53KPZBF5i1kGn6pW_JWneYkKkW3Q6yg.FDT7eMajsYKVegYd9kcOaHarZFDKsBJigy6tpt4tSK4&dib_tag=se&keywords=flexible%2Barm&qid=1729596863&sprefix=flexible%2Barm%2Caps%2C171&sr=8-6&th=1 and voila!  Of course you can also probably find something purpose made and better, but sometimes something cheap or repurposed will do just fine.

Totally. I eventually found that one and that was my back-up plan. I ended up splurging on myself (....'cuz if I don't do it, who will?), and bought this purpose built stern light from Row Kraft for $50 (well $60 with the shipping!!!!), https://rowkraft.com/shop/kraftlight-beacon-stern-light/

I also got a big, high visibility triangle flag, and a bunch of reflective tape. So now I'll both look cool and protect myself from being run over.

My plan is to attach it all to some PVC pipe.

I'll report back re: the light. It says it can be seen for 1 NM, which I'm hoping/thinking is good enough.

Just an fyi, a light is only required if operating at night. This requirement is why it is difficult to find kayak specific lights, especially ones that are rechargable. They need to have a certain brightness level to be in compliance, and most people who need this will power the light with their boat's on board batteries. Aside from paddling specific manufacturers, most assume that kayaks are a daytime only craft.

Should also note that if you are operating at night, you also need to carry flares.

Thx. I don't really plan to go "at night" a lot. But I'm a morning lark and like to hit the water early, so I thought having some visibility would help. So hopefully I won't need the flares if  just need to wait 30 to 60 minutes for first light

Don't forget fog too, it can be clear out for a long ways and move in on you during the day.  But the light has to be pretty bright to be useful in the fog. Still gives some peace of mind to have a light.  Be sure to have a whistle too, often one of the easiest things you can have on you to help in an emergency.

Thx. I have a good whistle, I’ve got a nice big high vis flag, and the light. Hopefully that helps. I really hope the light is sufficiently bright. We’ll see
