Joel...

Until you get a food saver... try glad press-n-seal freezer wrap to seal it up... you can easily prese the air out of that stuff and get a pretty darn good seal.

Or do as I do... freeze it in a block of ice inside a ziploc bag... keeps just as well as if vacuum sealed, except it takes up a lot more space in the freezer and takes a long time to thaw.  Works in a pinch though.

Nice fish... looking forward to more pics.

No need to freeze in a block of ice.  Freeze the meat first.  Then add just enough ice water into the ziplock to coat the meat.  A thin coat of ice water should freeze relatively fast and provide adequate protection against freezer burn.  I like to avoid exposing fish to fresh water as much as possible.  It affects the quality IMO.

Here's a pict of my 17+lber.  The other one is Fred's 13.  I already cut up my other fish when I thought of taking a photo.

Joel,
The camera phone pict doesn't do your big fish justice.

I'm smoking most of the fish rather than freezing any of it.  Frozen rockfish are ok, but salmon don't freeze well (IMO).  The texture and taste change radically.

when you are vaccumn sealing fish, freeze them partially so you don't suck the fish juice in to your sealer. This goes for anything that has juices.

I was talking about the fish!

Glad to hear the salmon are getting in reach but I'm trying to figure out how far you paddled and I'm thinking about 4 miles out.  That's a good haul if there's fishing involved, my hat is off too you.

I spent the 4th fishing around Pleasure Point and got my first taste of Mr Ling Cod.  Didn't win any battles but sure looking forward to engaging again.  Saw some guys headed out of SC harbor with 2 OK Prowlers on top driving like they were exicted.  I'd be wound pretty tight too if I'd had the day you guys did.

Congratulations on a great day fishing.

Letting a fish "juice" for a day results in a better quality frozen product.  Wrap the meat in a paper towel and set on extra paper towels or a on a grate in a tupperware.  Place in the fridge.  Don't leave the meat exposed or it will dry.  Freeze it the next day.  When defrosting, do the same thing and DO NOT leave it to defrost in the bag.  Sitting in it's own juices results in a fishy taste.

Congrats on an amazing fish Joel, and well-deserved.  Any idea how long a fight it was?

Did you fish today, breaking your continuous fishing day record?  Seems to be paying off!!

Pete,
I need to figure out how to use my GPS.  I believe we were fishing right around 3 miles from the jaws.  Paddle time each way was a little over an hr.  Coming in was faster with a slight swell at our back.

Also, paddling out, I know were were inadvertently zig, zagging in the dark.  It was real calm, with the exception of boater wakes when we started off.  We'd rest about every 15 minutes and were chatting along the way to relax.  We stopped about 75% of the way to the yellow can, to fish when we were on bait.  The drift was SLOWLY to the NE.

On a calm day, it isn't too bad, but I wouldn't try going that far in marginal conditions.  If the weather turns and you're paddling against the wind, it could really, really suck.  For me, paddling with another person helps make things go by faster and makes me feel more comfortable when I'm that far out.

PS, If you saw 2 yellow prowlers on a dark green Toyota 4x4 it was us leaving Bayside Marine around 2:30.

Dave - the fish fought for about 10 minutes (and it spun my yak a few times). The fish measured 38 inches long.

I only fished two days in a row (Friday @ LM and Saturday @ HMB) - I wanted to Fish LM again on Sunday but the conditions were rough so I took a day off. I fished ML on Monday. I don't think I can break my 4 -days in a row anymore  :smt011
