Non yak - Paradise and South Hampton/Richmond Flats

I was fishing with a friend on his boat and tried to pickup bait at Berkeley but the bait guy only opened for the party boats at 6am and called it a day.  We ended up going to Loch Lomond for a bakers dozen of bait but was disappointed by the shiners he gave me.  4 were decent size and the rest were babies that i could not use.  Fortunately Keith threw in some anchovies but I don't like using them for Halibut because I get a lot of drive by fish and today was no exception. 

Fished Paradise for several hours for nothing then decided to go to south hampton.  Picked up a legal halibut and one shaker.  We eventually drifted towards the Richmond waters behind the island on the out going tide and picked up another legal halibut and several shakers in 7 feet of water.  This is definitely within kayak range but the wind was blowing today and the water was on the rough side due to the wind.  It's been an interesting year for the halibut because there have been a lot of small ones and very few big ones. 

We also watched the Naval air show from a distance and that added to the entertainment for the day.  Until it rains, they will still be at the flats.  I think if you time the tide and wind it's do able for a kayak near the Richmond island at the marina.  Sorry no picture because I forgot the camera.

Sounds like ya covered alot of ground,

 I tried the Richmond area around marina Bay and bacon Island for nada last week, but did find some launch spots to get to Red Rock,

  South Hampton, is that the area just north of the San Rafael bridge? ...... Danglin

It's the old structure between Angel Island and the Richmond marina.  I tried to paddle to it once but the tide was to strong.  No need to paddle to Southampton because the Halibut were behind the Richmond marina island that protects the Richmond marina.  If you launch near the park you mentioned in your previous post and hook a left around the island then head towards Angel Island you will be in the fishing grounds.  The sonar only registered 7 feet and sometimes came up to 5 feet.  I was really shocked to find the Halibut in the shallows but they are there.  Mostly shakers and some legals.  It beats no fish which was the case at Paradise.

Thanx for the report, nows the time to target flatties for me, still havnt landed a big yak-flattie yet...
Im thinking paradise or Ft Baker.
