Maybe I'm missing something, but couldn't you simply just put a strip of gaffers tape or electrical tape over the port when your on the water? Maybe put your phone in a zip-lock bag?

Tape would help, but far from a sure thing on the AI, where splashing can be pretty intense.

I've got a holder for my iPhone, so it's always out and I like that, as I can look at the app any time (basically, like how a FF is mounted). Before iPhones were waterproof, I used a waterproof case, but I'd usually have to take it out of the case to do anything, so I don't want a waterproof case for a waterproof iPhone...

I tried a wireless charger the last couple of times out. While it works fine at home on a desk, I don't think it's suitable for the kayak, as any moisture or even slight jostling around causes it to disconnect.

If anybody knows how to hack the iPhone so that I can bypass the "liquid detected" warning, LMK. I'd be glad to take my chances...

What about a dedicated gps device? I'm sure there are some that work with Gaia, and are also waterproof. Then you can tuck your phone away safely and reserve your battery.

I wonder if the moisture sensor circuitry still active when we charge the phone while it's power off?

How to turn off liquid detection on iPhone?
If your iPhone hasn't been exposed to water or liquid, and there isn't any dust in the connector, you can safely tap the emergency override button. As mentioned, this button will both dismiss the alert and allow the phone to resume its normal function

I do recall my first smart phone was an iPhone 3 or 4 or some super old number compared to today.  I was having trouble charging so I took some rubbing alcohol and a q-tip too the old style connector, and it fried the battery and I had to pay to have it fixed.  :smt013

Yesterday, I ordered a new case that is supposed to work with the magsafe (wireless) charger. I think this could be the ticket. I'm hoping to test it out on the water tomorrow, but the wind looks to be just about nonexistent, so it might not be much of a test (need fast sailing, lots of splashing, and chaotic conditions for a real test).

Turn on the big fan and test it in the shower  :smt003

Try blowing the charge port with compress air to dry it out when you get that moister warning!

Don’t think I’ll be taking compressed air on my kayak…

I got a new case (Otter Box) and tried it today. The MagSafe (wireless) charging sort of worked, but the phone got hot, and the screen dims when it’s too hot which is annoying. The case does have a rubber plug that covers the charging port, so I think I’ll be able to plug it in to charge under most conditions. I’ll try that next.

Another downside is that the new case doesn’t fit in my custom iPhone mount, so I’ll have to come up with something else for that…
