I bought an Icom IC-M37 from West Marine about a year ago, and as of Friday, it seems to be seriously malfunctioning. I can power it up, and it shows channel 11. It seems to actually work on that channel, and I can even adjust the volume/squelch and set the hi/low. However, I cannot get it to switch to any other channel, and even the dedicated button that is suppose to switch to channel 16 does nothing.

Anybody else ever have a similar problem, preferably, that you were able to resolve?

Barring that, do you have a recommendation for a VHF, preferably one that is available at West Marine that I can get today?

I need to try and fix my Standard Horizon HX40, it receives but doesn't send.  It's only 2 years old, I am hoping it's the antenna, but maybe the mic is broken.  Other than that, I think it's a excellent radio, as it's the right size to me for a PFD.  I wish I had gotten it at WestMarine, because I know they would replace it easily.

One dislike I have though for it is they no longer have an LED to indicate it's charging.  Instead it has an icon on the LCD, I just dont like it as much as seeing an LED  :smt005

I'll take my (apparently) defunct radio back to WM and see if they'll replace it. I'm sure it's just outside the actual warranty window, which I believe is 1 year. In the past, WM has gone overboard on a couple of warranty issues that I had, but I won't be surprised if they won't do anything.

Same with the Icom, and I too prefer an actual light.

The worst, though, is Shark Shield, which has a light, but it's the opposite of everybody else (green for charging, red for charged). Not to hijack my own thread, but... On Friday, I was fishing the west side of SC, near where a shark visitation had occurred, and my shark shield died just after 30 minutes on the water. I'm hoping that it was just not fully charged, as opposed to the battery going bad...

I like the Standard Horizon HX 890. You should take the kaput one in with you to WM and see if it is close enough to the warranty coverage that maybe they will cover it.

It appears that Standard Horizon has a Standard 3 year warranty.  I'll see they honor it with a Amazon purchase.

Operator error...

The Icom radio has a little button that looks like a skeleton key, and guess what? If you press and hold it, it locks the channel! Even better, if you press and hold it when it's locked, it unlocks! Who would've thought!

I feel really stupid, which is not that unusual, to be honest...

Anyways, the radio is fine and I actually like it, so don't take this thread as a knock agains Icom VHF radios. But, I would recommend reading the manual...

takes a big man to say that

honestly, ICOM is a top brand in radios, Marine, Aircraft, HAM, etc. - it's the top shelf.

Glad you figured it out. I had bad experiences with standard Horizon and switched to Icom.

About Shark Shield failures - one cause can be that the small magnet in the power knob gets corroded and doesn't activate the switch within the sealed case. Solution is a replacement knob and not forcing water spray under the knob, just dunk the unit to rinse.

Haha!
It reminds me, one of the secretaries at my work back when I was 20 called for help. The printer won’t print. Apparently it was off.
