The Hollow 9-26-07

Lots of guys out there fishing today... leaves me to wonder... does anybody work around here? Apparently, the fish were all working... because they sure weren't biting. Frank, Duane, Sean, Adam, Ed, Ben, Angel... whoelse was out there??? Baja Reefer??? Sorry if I left anybody out... anyways, like I said, there was a crew out there today and the fishing pretty much sucked. Not many times I've been able to say that about the Hollow... like... never. It felt as if I was fishing the Santa Cruz Triangle rather than the Hollow. I didn't land a single ling or keep a single rockfish or cab... that's a first. Did hook into a nice butt though. Sorry Adam... it taped out at just over 38". So, I guess the day wasn't a total loss... never thought a devil fish would be my saving grace. I pulled the plug earlier than some and when I did... the stringers were a sad sight. I'll let the other fellas chime in with their catches though. Overall, the swell was nice... no yard sales today. No drift at all early in the morning. The wind was almost nonexistant until later on in the morning. Then, it picked up to a nice breeze. The sun was shining, the birds were singing... and I'm eating halibut for dinner.

Dang, Freddie!  Your nice hali makes up for any rf (period).  Although I'm working today; all I think is how you guys did and the first report to come out.  Thanks for taking the time writing this report and enjoy your halibut dinner!!!  At least one of us is enjoying a nice fresh fish.

Yup, Freddie nailed a nice flattie late in the game. I fished with Frank most of the day, we marked lots of fish on structure, but I think they ate all night long with the full moon. Tossed back a few and kept 6 assorted rf, including an 18 inch brute of a copper.

Conditions were perfect, full moon setting at 6 am, hardly any drift all day.
And so ends Rockfish '07. Ben

Maybe someone can help shed some light on this subject, but I've been hearing for a while now that it is best to not fish during a full moon-due to the fact the fish are more actively feeding at night since they can see better? I don't have any factual information to back this up, but I fished MBK with Frank on monday and it was pretty much the same result except for a few Canary's that were nice and string of sandabs. In past times I have experienced the same lack of activity during and after a full moon and swore I was not going to fish at these times again...just couldn't help myself again     Mike

Solsrf1      I too have had less luck near a full moon...However, from what I have heard, Most of the world record fish have been caught between 5 days before and 5 days after a full moon...I just havent had that luck.....Don (Bgddybstrd)

Nice hali Freddie... and just like you, for a minute there I thought I was fishing santa cruz 

I did end up catching quite a few fish but only a few of them looked worth keeping.  Most went back.

For some reason no matter where I went I ended up running into chinas, only two blacks/blues and they were pretty small.

I was pretty tired today.  That and the lack of action made me fish pretty lazily, I ended up paying the price for my laziness in jigs.  For some reason when you just drag your jigs/swimbaits on the bottom they get hung up on the reef. 

I'm thinking this will most likely be my last trip to the bean for the '07 season...fished there 3 times this year and each of them were great trips regardless of the catch.   Can't wait for it to all start again next year.

 This was my first trip ever to Bean Hollow.
 I had a blast and never felt safer fishing around you guys!
Thank you Frank, Fish Hunter, Sean and co!
I got a nice vermillion, cab and a decent halibut to top off a limit of rockfish.
My wife asked why I don't catch more halibut..!?

News Flash!:  I've been rockfishing in Humboldt for a long time and even kayak fishing for a long time and I've never heard of halibut being caught alongside rockfish except these Bean reports.  You guys have an extremely unique and exciting fishery there.  Enjoy it.  Preserve it as best you can too.
