This is my place for accountability, starting this project and completing it.  My buddy has a large chunk of cedar and cut me out a 2 by 8 rough.  He doesn't even have a kayak and is having a blast cutting his own for his grandkids.  This will be my extra paddle in the hatch. It has its merits in history and function.  Some of you wood guys could bust this out in a minute.  Paging Cowbro :smt005 :smt006. I'll do my best.  Stay tuned... :smt006

Love it, looks almost done already. You going to shape it to the pencil line? Belt sander and a steady hand could do that.

Looking forward to seeing this in person, I need an extra paddle and like making stuff.

That's going to be a fun project.  I recommend you prototype this on cheaper wood.  Get yourself a 2x8 of Doug Fir half the length of the desired paddle.  Prototype half of it on the cheaper wood and you'll have a reference for when you start making sawdust on the cedar.

Yes!  I’m gonna do that.  Pine is a wood option for this project.  Cedar is the gold standard though this is not red California cedar.  Thanks! :smt006

I had a White (Port Orford) Cedar kayak paddle a family friend made to go with a half scale dory my stepfather and I made when I was a kid. P.O.C is light and strong, second best would probably be Yellow (Alaskan) Cedar. Both woods are nice to work similar to pine. Red Cedar is much harder to work and not as strong.

Always thought this would be a neat project. I'm a fan of the Greenland style paddle.
It would make a great canvas for some woodburned decorations...
