Commercial rock fishing. Wow ! where do you start with that. Have they been asked for lower take ?

I've never seen nearshore rockfish species for sale commercially.  I usually only see slope rockfish.  Full disclosure: I don't shop very widely for commercial rockfish; I usually get it through my CSF or from known sustainable fishermen, so perhaps they don't target nearshore but others do.
Live nearshore rockfish are commonly marketed in Asian seafood markets such as 99 Ranch, etc. Gilled and gutted, the fish are prepared whole and most everything is consumed except the bones. Even eat the eyes and swim bladders! Like abalones, very little of the animal goes to waste. Most of us hack off two filets and toss the rest....considered by the Asian community a sacrilege. That's why the fish appear to be so valuable in these markets, but for many people a little goes a long way.
The satisfaction you get from doing a good deed is like pissing in your wetsuit...it gives you a warm feeling inside but nobody else gives a shit.

Out of respect for our fishery why don't we take it upon ourselves to start using descending devices, it's our fishery and we are as responsible as anyone for taking care of it.

Just a thought.

We have commercial rockfish here in the monterey bay. Would need to read up on how close they are permitted near shore.

I do see and have had friends tell me there are live rockfish pens that i have seen not very deep offshore.

Hoping someone that is familiar with this area might chime in.

My point is are other fishing groups being held accountable? Like commercial quotas reduced to help?

Another point to consider: We have a thorough network of MPAs, which were controversial and removed some of the best fishing areas as no-take zones. So in theory these relatively non-migratory species are already protected from an extinction threat. So a closure of all areas is completely unnecessary. The MPAs should guarantee that we will always have stocks of fish and bag limits can be adjusted up and down but not eliminated.

This is a really good point. Do they even take this into consideration? I doubt it since they also don't seem to take into account the actual range of quillbacks.

This is a great point and I haven't seen anyone bring it up. And with the 30x30 initiative, the amount of water covered by MPAs is going to more thatn double. If the quillbacks are going anywhere, it's not going to be because of fishing.
