It’s that time again, us Sonoma Co folks getting ready for the Rockfish opener!  Been ready for 3 months now of extra wait time. Got My fav jigs packed already to drop.
Special Rockfish gear  bagged and tucked in the tackle box, even got a new special weapon to try out!
But Wait a minute, no, not what I think it is….
Ocean conditions are a bit sketchy for a kayak! Holy Crap! is this a repeat of last year? I remember last season missing some fishing dates cause of Big Blue  being its self!
Then there’s the what can u handle  or what is safe. That is an answer on a sliding scale. For me 6 ft is the cut off, naturally wave secs and wind are part of the equation but sat is looking a bit sketchy.
I’m seeing 4-7 ft @ 9-11 sec, wind under 10. A bit bumpy, and I’ve noticed Rockfish can be tight lipped when it rough.
Is that the area others are seeing?
I’ve been Jonsing to get my Ling on but ?? Not to mention it’s gonna be HOT on saturday and a day on the ocean is sooo needed, but.?…?
Other fishing options are there but at the moment I’m stuck on The LingCod!
Am I the only person thinking this way?

Albion, Stay in the cove, lings will be there and safe paddling. Gotta love the opener. Fish all move in shallow. Cabs should be there too!
my new name should be Ostridge. Got my head in the sand. Going fishing and letting go of the other stuff I can't control anyway!

I’m in the same boat…spending the weekend at ocean cove but thinking of driving north on Sunday. Not looking for anything crazy but some fish tacos sure sound nice.

the curse of the saltwater fishing enthusiast is the feeling leading up to your fishing opener, hoping the weather and ocean cooperate.

Sending you calm sea vibes with low wind!

Hi Scotty

I miss our old season beginning on April 1st.
We need to hook up soon and explore more spots together.

I’m seeing conditions deteriorate as fast as I can refresh my web pages on them. I’d love to join you all at Albion if that’s the safe move. The only other idea I had was Van Damme.

I'm seeing 6' at 8 and 8' at 9 with 10-15mph winds - both sound like no fun to me.

I booked a site at Van Damme from Friday-Sunday, with high hopes to fish Saturday and Sunday.  Only to realize that 1) the season actually begins on Sunday 2) Sunday is looking pretty gnarly.  Still bringing the kayak though. With a NW swell Van Damme can still be fishable.  Fingers crossed

Or you can get up earlier, drive further, and hit SC or Monterey. Plenty of RF, chance for lings and halibut. Conditions look good.

Hi sunsaengneem,

Will do! I know it’s pretty far out, but conditions look much better next weekend! I always book the rough weekends.

Today I’m considering Tomalas…
Could be my lucky day for a Halibut 🤞🏼as I have a current  Hali Skunk going I’d like to break.
Hav’nt heard of much action over there  but it’s only 45min from the house, it’s gonna get me on the salt and it is July,
Maybe it’s time to start the bite?🤞🏼

Scotty

how are you at making Bait?

I booked a camp site at Salt Point for the weekend of 22nd.   As of now, it is looking borderline so hopefully the forecast will change for the better over next week.
