How was fishing today?  Any big Mama? 

Any luck…?

Paddled to the squid grounds in 140+ fow and snagged a dozen or more, things were slow
Found some more spotty schools of squid as I paddled towards the hotel, they weren't biting well either tho they were there
Got into ~50 fow and got slammed on my first drop
I'm no expert, but I can usually tell from the fight if it's a lingcod, a rockfish or a halibut before they surface
This was definitely different and pulled some good drag from my spinning setup
A HUGE Ocean Whitefish (NorCal Standards) came up and flashed next to the kayak before snaking back down once more
Hooked well I swung it in and rejoiced at the excellent table fare in my future
AlsHobie came to mind as he's been the Whitefish Whisperer the past few seasons
I obviously hit hard reef bottom as the next 30 minutes my beautiful squid was getting thrashed by small blue rockfish, but before I left the spot to look for flatties I traded in some of my precious squid for two steamer sized Vermillion
I met the 3rd place winner of last years MBK derby in the parking lot, Chris, and persuaded him to join the "MADNESS"

Gotta keep trying, something about paddling Bushy's old boat makes me want to keep fishing and growing my beard till I get this year's first flattie

Congrats on the haul!  That's a gorgeous whitefish... making me hungry for smoked whitefish salad.  Thanks for the report.
