In a greater effort to educate myself on local species, if you post a picture of a rockfish and know it species, please indicate it so I can learn more.

Missed the opener today.  I may be fishing tomorrow, and will certainly fish july 4.

These aren't rockfish from a report, but rather photos I've taken of the various rockfish in the large tank we have here at the Bodega Marine Lab.

They're some of the more common species you'll find in close to shore.

Probably the most common is the Black Rockfish, Sebastes melanops

Followed by:

Blue Rockfish Sebastes mystinus

Copper Rockfish Sebastes caurinus

Grass Rockfish Sebastes rastrelliger

Brown Rockfish Sebastes ayriculatus

Vermillion Rockfish Sebastes miniatus

Black & Yellow Rockfish Sebastes chrysomelas

Gopher Rockfish Sebastes carnatus
Elk I Champ
BAM II Champ

These guys are among the prettiest you can pull up.  Tend to be dinky though - and sting!  Some people call them 'nike' rockfish.  Can you guess why?
The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down
Of the big lake they call Gitche Gumee
Superior, they said, never gives up her dead
When the gales of November come early.
