Wild fennel doesn't have the bulbs (and the bulbs actually grow above the ground btw).

Crush up some leaves, it should smell like black licorice.

Looks like dill to me.  It grows wild in abundance around here - but might not be the most useful variety. There are a few different types, as I understand.

My plant id app says sweet fennel.  Could be dog fennel.  I don’t think it’s dill.

Crush it and smell it.

This is Dill
We plant it between the pickling cucumbers so they can become acquainted early :smt005
Juvenile dill looks a lot like young California Poppy or carrot tops
We harvest the tops when they flower along with the spindly leaves
They’re a delicious snack in the garden, in pickles obviously, and in a vinaigrette salad dressing

Thanks for the help everyone :smt006 I added some more photographs to original post to help identify.

We ended up having some store bought Dill which I compared with. The crushed up dill in question didn't smell bad at all. Smells a bit more of a mild version of the store bought dill, but then again my smell is all over the place.

From what I can gather all dill/fennel is edible so I might just give this a try. I just need to be on the look out for Poison Hemlock (reddish/purplish stem base and white flowers) and stay clear.

So no.  Don't eat that without a positive ID.

Thanks for that I will not eat without positive ID for sure. The stems don't have the Fuzz/Hair that I'm seeing with Dog Fennel
