What’s up everyone?

I’ve always wanted to fish for halibut in Alaska and i think this is the year I'm going to make it happen.

I’m looking for any recommendations you’re willing to share. Charters, hotels, or all inclusive lodges… i’m undecided which route to go.

I see crackerjack in Seward has high recommendations.

Is it best to take my own gear or use whats available on the boat?

Any info would be helpful.  Or if you're going and are looking for someone to fill your private charter, i might be down for that.

I've done charters out of Seward and Homer. More fun launching out of Homer, imo.
Usually the charters have their own gear.

Homer was very good to us last time we went.  Polepole has the name of our Charter skipper.  We paid a bit extra to go further, down to the Barren Islands about halfway to Kodiak. Dylan, Raydon, the Allen Sisters and Captain Tom all pulled Pac Hali's around 100#.  I got one about 150# but had to release.  Use their equipment.

Best eating!!

thinking about putting a trip together to take my 10 yr old up the week of October 16.  Not sure if it'll be fishing big water or exploring primarily, but there will be some element of fishing involved.  If we go, b great if you'd join

Let me know when you're a bit further along on the planning.   So long as there's a possibility of targeting a halibut I'd be into it.

The other boat we've had a good time on running to the Barren Islands is the West Cape out of https://www.northcountrycharters.com/

Ifound this picture too, taken at the Barren Islands...It was just "one of those days," like one we'll never ever forget!  That beach in the background is a little cove looks perfect for a campout and kayak launch!  The yelloweyes were caught pretty close to that spot there, outside a little bit.

A few years ago we went up for a couple weeks in RVs and had a blast. The trip was not aimed at fishing but we did grab a half day "chicken" halibut trip out of Homer with North Country.  We stopped in about 200 fow and dropped down, fish on every drop, after awhile all the fish followed their hooked pals on up to the surface, so the last few I caught were basically on the surface. Halibut everywhere. Only time I've ever got tired of catching. Might be a good option for a 10yr old.

Ketchikan/ Clover Passage  is OK but not the best  fishing.   Last time  I talked  to  McKim around  2016 he was out of the Kayak  fishing  business.  Chinook   Lodge may have Hobies  to rent and you  may  be able  some older  kayaks like  T-15s  near  there  too  . That's  what  we used  on my last  visit  to  Ketchikan.
