Vitamin deficiency

Interesting read in the LA Times and maybe elsewhere -- seems many returning salmon have a low vitamin B1 deficiency that is impacting survival rate among the fry. Theory is that they are feeding more and more on anchovies and less on other food sources -- anchovies are high in a component that breaksdown the B1 in their bodies and ultimately the eggs.

Definitely noticeable with the fish I caught this year. One salmon I caught was so pale and lethargic. Not much of a fight and the meat was oily like an anchovie. Not much for taste either.

On the flip.side, a few that were a beautiful red from feasting on krill.
