Pyramid has been on my bucket list for years. Finally getting the chance to go this Sunday. Looking for advise on rod size and tackle. We will be trolling and jigging. Any help/tips would be appreciated.
Thanks, Kevin

I have nothing to contribute but I plan on making a trip next month so I’m subscribing to learn. Here’s an older WON report on some ideas.

Look to join the fresh n salty group on Facebook. They've got a bunch of guys on there that are pretty fanatical about pyramid and go multiple times each season in big groups. I recall they had a great opener and everyone hooked into multiple cutthroats -- great read covering the trip, tackle and methods used. It's a bucket list fish for me as well.

8 lb test on a medium trout rod will be fine. Jigging is pretty hot right now. I suggest Blockhouse.

Only been there once fished couple hours each day for 2 days from shore. My advice is finding a local shop (cabelas and a few shops, google it) and ask for tackle advice and where to fish. You may end up spending some money in the shop, but whatever they recommend is going to be relevant for your fishing. This is my go-to way now when I'm new to a fishery, been working very well.

I don't think you will have issues catching fish there. I don't think I've ever been skunked and I've pretty much just used most of the "junk" (rapalas and spoons) in my box I just want to clean out and make barbless. Probably the easiest to catch fish on out there for me trolling was using Sierra Spoons. If you are going through Reno, Mark, Fore and Strike has a whole wall of goodies and a few of the guys that work there kayak fish now so they might know the "hot" lure? I've caught in 4' to 70' of water, but getting down at the drop off 20-40' works best for me. Even though it's sandy, it's still a bit "hairy" and can foul up your lure with grass. I like a sliding sinker ball to get me down and it keeps me a foot or so off the bottom so my lure stays clean. I let the ball hit the sand to make some disturbance, cutts are really aggressive.

I tend to go up Warrior point mainly cause there's less people. There should be fish anyplace you want to stop though. I tend to be a safety last kind of guy, but if you haven't fished Pyramid and its going to get nasty wind late morning, it's better to stay in pretty close to shore. Even in a peddle boat. Pyramid loses folks every year who have fished there all their life and they just aren't ever found. It's one of the only freshwater lakes where when I get off the lake I have land sickness. Basically feel like I'm still bobbing in the yak. It's just a cool, but different place. Enjoy!

I would second the recommendation to check out the area around Warriors point. Its got a large beach for launching and camping, and good fishing opportunities to the north and the south. In the fall, I've never had to fish much deeper than 60 fow to find the fish, and more often than not the good ones are in 10' of water or less. I like to fish the shelves and points, and though they can be caught throughout the water column, the bigger fish I've hooked were on the bottom.

I bring too much stuff up there, and a lot of different things work well. As mentioned, spoons are a must and Sierra Spoons work great for me too. I also like to bring some lymans lures, they're 5'' plugs in a variety of patterns. Green, chartreuse, brown, and yellow are a few of the colors that catch me the most there.

I use my Shimano Trevala/Tekota 300 combo. Three way setups like you would use for halibut work great, so does a DR. I'd buy the two rod permit and run one of each. The thee way rig can track along the bottom as you weave across the shelves and go over points, and the DR line can run mid column. I like this approach since it requires less adjustment to keep the gear in the fishy zone. I add about 100' of 10 pound test flourocarbon topshot and join it to my 40 lb braid mainline.

I'd bet you found this already, but just in case, here's the website you can use to buy permits in advance. There's some other useful information on the site as well.

I did a trip last year and through my research on our search bar ^^ found a member named 4est who really gave me some insight and showed me around up there. Might be worth a message to him if you have any specific questions, he was super helpful!

I'd have no idea how to fish it, but have always been intrigued when I drive past it. Beautiful lake in an amazing location.
