"lets talk about being responsible on the water and knowing when to call it quits, how many times did you have to get rescued by the coastguard now? how many times have i had this happen, NONE. Thank you."
Ron:  really, you stay so close to the shore, you don't need rescueing.  I've broken windsurfing equipment so I called for rescue.  18 years of windsurfing; 2 rescues---not at bad streak.

"as you compared me to you by saying > wimp vs. suicidal

I shall compare you to me by saying > irresponsible and greedy vs. enjoying any day i can be in the water."
Ron: now waita minute; where's the 'greed' factor, if I am fishing for my 10 limit.  While you poached a bug in the marine reserved because you did not bring enough food for camping...

"if you want to discuss this issue further we can, if you want to drop it altogether we can as well but i too have the right to voice my opinions about you which i have and are honest as well as true. I have a true friend who can attest all of this."
Ron:  may I ask who f--- started this when you gave your very long point of view about 'manual' compass, etc, etc?  you.

"here a map in case you forgot what the island looks like, no, it wasn't even 1/4 of the island."
Ron:  wow, <1/4 of the isl so that makes your paddling 100 yards from the beach.  why don't you figure out how many miles was it?  wimp.

I'm risk averse

about the relative merits of compasses vs gps though

if you ever do get stuck out in fog and your gps dies like mine has on a couple of occasions when it mattered you'll love that little compass more than you can imagine

Scott 10 ft vis does exist and it makes you dizzy and disoriented as hell no matter what equipment you have Been fishing lately? Seems like last time I saw you post was your Alaska trip?

Sorry to see this thread go sour!

Can I venture to say that both GPS and good ol' manual compasses both have their place?  I'd say the saavy paddler will have both...

And it makes sense to me to have a seperate GPS, so if your FF batteries go dead, you don't lose your gps too.

That's how I roll  :smt002 But I also keep a compass handy in my PFD and a flare gun in my dry box. I fear and respect the ocean - every day that I'm on it :smt002

sorry folks, im bummed our friendship went south. it sucks but thats life.

this will be my final post about this subject on this sad day>

i never singled him out in regards to my opinions about gps / compass but he thought different. nothing personal about it.

i thought i was welcome to voice my opinion being this is a public forum.

im not willing to sling trash back and forth but each man knows whats right and wrong.

it'll take me some time to get over this sadness. i thought we were friends but now i look back and it dont look like it anymore.

i sent sailfisk a pm to close the deal. i can forgive him for the post to try and defame me as well but i was being true and cant let a man get away with falsehoods otherwise i'd just be doing him a disservice. thats just the kind of guy i am.

i will say this though, he is a good father to his boy. he'd go out of his way to make that kid happy no matter what it takes and how tired he is or how late it is.

tomorrow im going fishing, that always helps. cant wait, got my gear by the door... real friends fish together and dont use one another.

Well, you still don’t get it John.  When my ff/gps unit died on me when I was in the middle of the fog---the battery died because I was using the ‘motorcycle’ battery that you recommended me to buy that was not even considered rechargeable so it was just draining the juice.  While I did not blame for my fog incident (since you said you did not know that the ‘motorcycle’ battery is not rechargeable), I shared my views in this forum about the virtue of having a ‘manual’ compass. Now you don’t come around and say, “if you have a ff w/ built in gps or a gps that isnt working right or with battery power to last the whole time you are out you should dump the trash and get one thats reliable.”  What a mor--!!!  The battery power of my ff/gps did not last the trip because it was the wrong battery you recommended!!!

I’m out. You can say all you want.  What I learned in that fog incident is get a ‘manual’ compass as standby.

John, since you keep a 'motorcycle' battery with you for your motorcycle; why don't you use 'motorcycle battery' for a while on your ff; drain it all the way with your ff and then recharge it and then hook it up in your ff; now do this for a couple of weeks or months when you use your ff for kayak fishing.

Yeah, Cabella's battery will work on ff but not 'motorcycle' battery on ff.

I'm signing off; got my 10-limit of rf today so I don't have to face the demon at BH tomorrow.

I'm pretty old-school too, but I am very pleased with my GPS 60.  Only niggle is it would sometime lose satellite reception temporarily, (a few minutes only), but I figured out that was my fault for not keeping the antenna uncovered and pointed up.  As long as it's on, it will track your movements...  doesn't get much easier than that.

How's the sattelite signal under dense fog?

Never had it out in the fog, good question.  Never had a problem in heavy overcast weather, though.

Well I didn't say it didn't exist, just that it's almost unheard of. Maybe "rare" would have been more accurate? I've flown in IMC and not had any problems, but I'm not sure how I'd do in 10 foot vis on a kayak. Might be a worthwhile exercise to put on some foggles and go paddling...

I did Elk right after AK, then a powerboat trip with Alan Tani, for Albacore. Freshwater on the weekends, but that doesn't really count :) I'll most likely be back on the salt this coming weekend though.

Regards,
Scott

hey folks, i got some pm's form people asking what happened on this thread and why i removed my postings after the initial one i made. i apologize for having turned this thread into one that was way off topic.

i can take full responsibility for my part of it and have removed the posts that have nothing to do with the original topic.

i don't want to use this forum to sling dirt around and any personal issues can be handled off line. whatever the other person chooses to say about me is out of my control as well but it should never have gotten personal and out of line.

again , the opinion i have about the topic is purely my opinion and nobody else's. its a public forum and thats what its for. use it as such. thats how people learn from one another.

thanks folks,

john

Good Job and very MATURE like move and comments.  It's hard not to TELL IT LIKE IT IS sometimes, but I've learned (recently) that if I don't have someting nice to say, then i won't say anything at all.....I do agree 100% that "we ALL" learn from others experiences.

Garmin GPSMap 76

$160 w/free shipping

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00005B4BJ/ref=pd_luc_mri/103-7657258-8238221?%5Fencoding=UTF8&m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&v=glance

I use it for:

- marking launch/land location
- marking fishy spots/structure
- marking crab pots
- determining drift direction vis-a-vis targeted structure (where to start drift)
- calculating time and distance to target/float planning
- researching tides per location
- getting me out of "where am I" jams in the fog!

IMHO well worth the $$.

holy crap thats so much cheaper than it was before! when i was looking to get it it was more than double this price!

i think i need an upgrade: )

thanks for the link!

john
