Wondering how long folks here would keep fresh squid before deciding not to fish with it?  For either A: Halibut or B: rockfish.

Thanks.

My guess, as long as it stays on the hook it's be good as bait, in reality fish aren't picky eaters. On the other hand the smell might get to you. One of the best baits on the planet is a regurgitated octopus. In my experience, they seem to only come from lings, not uncommon for them to gift you one shortly after you pull one up. If you get one, hook it up and send it back down.

So, if I swallow a few whole mini octopi before I launch, a little seasickness will ensure a steady supply of awesome ling bait? That might be my secret weapon for the next kayak fishing tournament...

You might want to use a bait that looks like a baby octopus, like a small tub bait.  It taste better.

When it smells, I have a hard time wanting to use it unless I have to.  Preferably before it smells is my advice.  :smt044

Freeze it as soon as you can. Preferably vacuum sealed! Treat it like any other fish that you put in the fridge. If it starts to turn pink, I'll freeze it and put it in the trash. Once the color starts to turn, it gets REALLY gross quickly!

I usually treat squid as use once and dump the rest in the ocean.  Usually leave one on the seat of my boat to find later in the week. Squid don't keep.
