In researching buying a handheld gps I came across a new model made by magellan which will be coming out soon. It seems to be a good value with all models coming with color screens, ipx7 water proof, and a new user interface kind of like a pc's windows on the screen. The bottom of the line is going to go for $129 but the one I'm more interested in, the triton 400 $199, has the sd card slot to store more waypoints or add maps without buying any expensive accessory cable. The two top of the line models are pretty trick with touchscreens, led flashlights, voice recorder to name your waypoints, and mp3 players. The top one also has a 2mp digital camera but it will go for $499 I think. The color screens look pretty sharp. Hopefully they'll be out long enough before christmas so the initial retail prices will drop in time...... to get one in my stocking.                               Jim/redyak

Sounds cool, But after using a fish finder and hand held GPS for a couple of years, I'm making the change to a combo. Since I use a small rechargeable battery for the fish finder, I won't have to worry about AA's for the GPS anymore. Additionally, I'll have one less thing in the pocket behind my seat, which equals more snacks.

CHEERS!

I'm not happy with the build quality and software that cam with my Magellan Explorist 500 and MapSend software.  The rear cover for the battery doesn't look like it seals properly.  Connecting to the PC with USB requires shutting down the GPS and computer.

The software that was bundled with the GPS was an incompatible version.  It took several calls to tech support to finally get a version that is compatible with the GPS.

I'd make sure you look at the device in store before buying.
