iPhone 14 is rumored to have satelite capability. May be an alternative for PLBs. Take that with a grain of salt as it looks like there are hurdles to still overcome.....

I saw the announcement from Elon Musk yesterday with T-Mobil CEO. Seems the first phase is only gonna be with T-Mobile phones, and for SMS only at the beginning. The story is still being developed. They're trying to get more providers onboard. It would kill the market for those SAT phones and devices. A game changer for sure.

Plbs operate on 433mhz 406mhz. Fundamentally different technologies.   Plbs will allow a rescuer to pinpoint the target rather than just send a gps location. A vhf with gps and distress would be a good choice with the same results

They can triangulate your phone location right now. If there's an application for this feature, I'm sure they will implement it. In fact, yesterday's announcement mentioned first responder applications will be implemented first.

I imagine the issue isn’t so much your phone knowing where it is on the globe, rather getting that information to people that can save you when you have no cellular signal.

I’m curious to see how they are solving it.
