They say it's the largest red tide ever documented and spreading far beyond the East Bay. Does anyone know if it's up in Tiburon ? This can't be good for the halibut and might even affect the migrating salmon. There are some super mild tides coming up Labor Day weekend but this may put a damper on any plans for Bay halibut.
"Although scientists are still working to construct a comprehensive timeline of the algal bloom, including what caused it and how it spread, data from researchers and the California Department of Public Health confirm that the bloom now spans much of the bay, including north of the Bay Bridge into Marin and Richmond, which has been previously unseen."

“This is the largest and longest lasting red tide on record for San Francisco Bay,” said Jon Rosenfield, a senior scientist at the environmental watchdog Baykeeper. “Something of this magnitude and this duration definitely does not happen every year or even every decade.”

This is probably linked to higher temps in the water. Just happen to read about a big fish die-off in the bay due to the same algae bloom.

This isn't spreading as far north as Elk/Navarro is it? I was hoping to spearfish there this weekend. Any intel on conditions up there?

The bloom in San Francisco Bay is dominated by a harmful species known as Heterosigma... While it’s not toxic to humans, it can cause skin and eye irritation, according to the San Francisco Bay Regional Water Quality Control Board.

“What I hope will happen is we’ll get a wind event and it will mix up San Francisco Bay and the algae species will mix to the deeper depths of the bay, and with not a lot of sunlight, the species will die,” Cochlan told SFGATE on the phone. “It will also mix more oxygen into the water.”

We had a different type up north called domoic acid that wrecked out shellfish for 5 years. so glad you arnt dealing with that down in the bay.
