My favorite net is a gaff.
Exactly. I carry a net for legal requirements only (Primary folding tucked out of the way). Any fish that's borderline never makes it inside boat, everything else gets the gaff.

Same for me on the ocean, never needed a net for undersized fish just do a quick release.  But FW I do a lot more CnR fishing and landing some of those feisty rainbows or kokanee is far easier in a net than a gaff  :smt044  Actually, I shouldn't poopoo that idea until I've tried it.  :smt044

Do I smell a small fish gaffing contest coming on?  :smt044

I usually don't even carry a net on saltwater, and have never even been asked about it by a warden. I've already had to show my fishing license 3 times this year, and my lack of net was not an issue.

Of course, it could happen, so I do keep  an eye out for a cheap foldable net that'll fit inside the hull, but have not found one yet...
Are you pondering what I’m pondering?

I believe that gaffs are not allowed in freshwater...

Thanks to Tedski for NCKA expressing me the Promar premier 20".  It's sooooo light, and the webbing looks so much better, can't wait to try it this weekend.
