I used to use Scotty mounts for everything, but then I decided Railblaza was better (smaller, lighter, no need to drill a giant hole, positive locking, etc.). But, now I think I'll go back to Scotty.

I've had a Railblaza "side port" mount inside the cupholder of my Hobie for a long time, with a rod holder inserted. Today, I tried to remove the rod holder and it was impossible to do so by hand, and even with some tools, it was difficult. It took me a while to figure out what had happened, but it appears that the mount itself is fine, while the base of the rod holder has swelled. That makes it impossible to remove or insert by hand.

The first pictures show the rod holder base and the mount, while the second show the base inserted as far as it goes. It's supposed to seat flush, but the top part is too big to slide into the mount, and unless it's fully seated, it can't be locked into place. It seems like a major flaw to me, especially since Railblaza charges such a high price...

My railbaza for the akas does the same and I have to pound on it with my hand to seat it properly before letting me lock it in. Then sometimes it would jam and taping it sideways then it would loosen and unseat from the base. Frustrating but has been working so far for me.

I find it kind of annoying that’s it’s so hard to remove, and if I had to do so on the water, I don’t think it would be possible. Seems like a really poor design…

The Scotty's with plunger button things I find to be very convenient when kayak fishing.
