Wing Paddle

Anyone have a 220cm wing paddle gathering dust?  I'm curious about the advantage for efficient paddle technique...

Sorry I don’t have one, but I was curious about this paddle.. never heard of it. Sounds like it’s ideal for sit inside kayaks, and only for going straight. BTW, the article also said that carbon fiber shaft is very rigid (efficient) but can strain the body (read injury).

Yes, they are painful if used improperly or if you have the wrong paddle for one's ability...if used properly they can be a joy of lightning glide and other level paddle euphoria...

My very first sea kayaking paddle back in ‘94 was a Werner wing in full glass. Everything you already know is what I discovered to be true. Well not the pain. But I found a lot more joy in being able to do other things with a paddle other than a forward propulsion stroke, so when I forgot mine at a put-in (doh!!!!!!) I didn’t feel all that horrible with another Werner in a standard blade San Juan….

I did look at the paddles at Ruben’s place when I picked up the divorce boat, and liked what I saw quality wise. The shaft was smaller in diameter than what I consider the norm though. Which is plus/minus depending on your needs lot viewpoint.

I have a 205-215 epic small/mid wing paddle, which works great against the swell/current/wind. I could push a maxim speed around 6.9MPH which my other paddles could not give.

Yay, confirming my hopes.  According to their selection specs I would fit a 214cm though the stealth is 23” wide and I’m thinking their thinking I’m on a surf ski…

Side note, have you ever propellered off your yak on a mis-tuned catch?

When I cruise about 4-5MPH, I have no problem on the mis-tuned catch. Actually I feel that the catch will be automatically aligned when I set my grip a little bit loose. When I was sprinting the yak at fastest speed, yes, sometimes I felt unstable when paddle catch went wrong. But stealth profisha has a very good secondary stability, never fell off

I’m super convinced a wing paddle is in the cards, Father’s Day?  Straight up purchase…Mother’s Day gift for my wife?  That doesn’t make sense…hmmm, gonna have to “wing” it on da wifey…

 

I use an RPC3 midwing paddle and i can confirm it is harder on your body.  I don't know if I would say its efficient. It "scoops" much more water so it requires more force to push it requiring more energy on your part, but it will push you through the water quickly and the acceleration is great.  I use a 210-220 in full carbon.  If you are fit and care about covering ground quickly and getting a work out a wing paddle is for you.  If you are concerned about energy consumption on the water and being tired and having worn out shoulders you might want to stay with a euro blade.

Where the wing come sin handy for me is a. in the surf punching through bigger waves, and b. when im trolling a big diver like a nomad dtx with a giant lip.

Thanks brah,  down the road, but might get one to "get" fit...not too concerned about getting tired though I do get tired but push through...
