After taking my ocean kayak surf class last Saturday, my suspicion about needing a new paddle was confirmed. I love my hobie Revo 16, but hobie sure hands out a crappy paddle.  Nice carbon shaft paired with a plastic blade that has the power stroke capability of a wet noodle under load.

Soooo, I really only need a paddle for brief periods during launch and retrieve.  If I was not surf launching and retrieving, I'd be content with the paddle I have.  I'd like something that can maximize launch speed & power for a very brief period of time. Period. That's it.

Thoughts?  High angle, offset, carbon fiber?

I like Aqua Bound Manta Ray.  It has a big face with enough paddle length.  For me, that helps with go-go-go surf mode (deep as I can get but very frequent strokes, which gives me mad power push).  I used to get 220cm, but now I wont get anything less than 240cm.  The longer paddle gives me the ability to turn more by extending the power stroke farther from the kayak.  Plus, if I have my AMAs on, the longer the better.

Have broken all my Hobie paddles except one, and it's relegated to being a backup only now stored inside my X-Factor.  I did practically the same thing, after my first class I decided I needed a decent paddle.  So I went to a kayak shop and felt them by weight and wanted something that would be easy on the arms.  Went with a Werner, and though I can't say what model it was, it's been a great paddle for over 12 years of abuse!  I kept actually wishing it would break so I could try another, but it just doesn't die.  :smt044  It's always been easy to pull apart and rotate the feather and I just cant say enough good things about it.  However, I'd like to get a angled shaft one next, at least to try out.  Had played around with some NCKA members angled shafts and it really felt more ergonomic in the hands. I'll probably by that and one similar to my old one someday soon  :smt003  EDITED  :smt004

Werner paddles are the beezneez… hobie paddles feel cheap and overweight. Considering how much coin we drop on these plastic floaters..

I've used bent-shaft paddles for many years when whitewater kayaking.  They provide a natural wrist position, they tell you exactly what the position of your paddle blades are when bracing, sculling, and rolling, and they give you powerful control over the orientation of your paddle blades.  However, I don't use a bent-shaft paddle with my sit-on-top fishing kayaks.  They don't lie flat against the side of your kayak in a paddle holder, and I don't feel that I need a fancy paddle for the small amount of paddling which I do when launching and landing a sit-on-top kayak.  With my Revolution, I use one of my old straight-shaft whitewater paddles, which is much better than the Hobie paddles, and has been languishing in my garage since I started using bent-shaft paddles for whitewater kayaking. With my Pro Angler, which is horrible to paddle, in order to reach over the H-Bars, steering controls, and 360 control which make the boat so miserable to paddle, I have to use the Hobie paddle which came with the boat, which is about eight feet long.
