I need a new balldragger for halibut and salmon on the yak, my old boat rods aren't cutting it.  Gotta be around 8', need the height to get the fish close into the with all that trolling junk. Any suggestions?  Gonna take a beating so glass better than composites.  Needs to handle 1-2 pounds for trolling.

What are you guys using (8 feet plus) that you like?

Price range?

I have a Phenix abyss that I like for that scenario. It also fished sturgeon well and pulls divers for salmon too. Good tip, tons of backbone.

A Daiwa proteus would also fit the bill and is very similar to the abyss.

I'll check those out. Probably lower price range, my experience on the yak ocean fishing is that the rods get beat up hard. I've got a bunch of rods from my boating days, but they are all 6-7 ft and not working on the yak with the flasher, leader lengths.

I started last season with a fast action, 8' Cousins. One day in heavy seas and the ball being bounced all over the place (couldn't maintain bottom), convinced me to move to something with a more moderate action.

I switched to a Phenix 806 Abyss and really like it for halibut. I imagine it would do well for salmon balls (though I use a downrigger and a different rod for that application).

I have a Phenix Abyss HD 786 and an Abyss 807. Both are fantastic rods and I use my 786 for trolling lead 1-2#. The 807 is a little too heavy for halibut or salmon but 786 works great. I think I would prefer a 806 over the HD 786. I kinda like the older blanks more than the new ones. I really like the Phenix Abyss 806, good 1pc rod for the price

8' Med Okuma Monterey has served me well so far. And you get that sweet Okuma warranty. I think it's a $40 less than the Phenix Abyss 806 too with a similar feel.

Seeker 270H-8 is one of the best do it all glass rods for Bay Area fishing.
I use a slightly lighter and shorter seeker 270-7. The seeker 270-7 pulls 1# beautifully, but I tried 2.5# on the cattle boats once and it was really pushing the limits. 2# probably would’ve been fine tho. You might also want to take a look at the Daiwa VIP 270. Basically a clone of the Seeker for around $100 that comes in both 7’ and 8’.

Thanks, I didn't know Okuma had that line.  Is that the MON-HS-801M or the MON-HS-801M+ version?

I like the Abyss 807 for salmon and use it for halibut. May pick up an 806 for buts though, the 807 is a little heavy.

I still break out the ugly stick tiger lites though, been going strong for 10+ years. I think they make an 802ML.

801M—I remember the 801M+ being significantly more rigid
