I also use a descender to release lake trout brought up from the depths. I have no idea on the survival rate for freshwater fish, but it has to be better than not using a descender…
Usually out of the running for Husband of the Year by January 4th of each year...

Skip the rubber band around the grip. Use a 24oz cannonball for weight in case you get a big yelloweye. Use a handline reel to hold your line. Use a line that is thick enough to easily handle by hand. Thinner paracord comes to mind.
