Throwing it way back. Mid 70's.

Wasn't from a kayak but what a thrill it was.

Was fishing from the shore on the south side of the mouth of the klamath river. The breaker waves were filled with either grunion or small smelt. Like black clouds scattered up and down the beach.

The redtail perch were on fire. So I launched a cast on my trusty 12 foot surf pole in hopes of catching an even bigger perch than i had already been catching.

My line starts peeling and is staying on the bottom. My first thought is a ray. As i lay some drag on to him my line starts raising two breakers back.

I start yelling out its gonna jump. 😆 By now a few people are watching as this beauty comes out of the water and starts to roll. All i can think is that its gonna wrap my line around those large diamond plates and hes gonna be a goner. After what seemed an eternity i landed it with the help of my Dad.

One of many great memories shared with my Dad who introduced me to the sport of fishing.

Someone on Coastside identified the B&W picture Southern California islands circa 1964, second one 1968 houseboat on the delta, third one 1975, with a 1974 Chevy Impala 2 door 350 in the background. It was a dog compared to my dad’s previous cars. I got the hand me down 1970 Dodge Monaco 2 door with a 440 it was pretty fast, but then came the Kawasaki H-3, the H-2, and on and on.

My wife threw away my bell bottoms when we got married. I've never forgiven her...

Definitely cant keep a green sturgeon now a days. One of the best tasting fish i have ever eaten. I remember the flesh being pink like pork and firm.
