I have a handheld one - wondering if I need something better for my Malibu Kayak.

I would try it out as you would be using it. You may find that a piece of tubing on the part that the water comes out of will help you clear the inside of your kayak.

This is what I always carry: https://www.amazon.com/Scotty-544K-13-5-Inch-Float-Kayaks/dp/B001M4HT98  The REI one I think is good too.  I've only had to use it on someone else's kayak that flipped over, or I've also used it to just drain out some water that came in through my rudder lines on swelly days. It's cheap insurance to have, especially if you venture off solo and far from help.  Kept inside the hull with a cord that makes it easy to fetch from my center hatch.  I also always carry a scotty throw rope: https://www.amazon.com/Scotty-Throw-50-Feet-Floating-Line/dp/B002BBK59C/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=scotty+throw+rope&qid=1626372405&s=sporting-goods&sr=1-1 which has come in handy many many times for me, including when I had to have a boat tow my kayak in during high winds.
