Lowrance customer service is as much help as a tick on a hound dog. Has anyone figured out if there is a Hook Reveal 5 with a built in coastal map? Lowrance could not help me at all with this simple question. Is the TripleShot model with Navionics+ US/ Canada mapping w high chirp/side scan/downs includes coastal charts and plotting? Website shows a model with C-Map Contour+ Genesis Live, but is confusing as the illustrations can be interpreted either way and Lowrance was less helpful. Customer service literally was reading the brochure that was in front of me. Basically, I am wondering if anyone have experience with what I am looking for in a Lowrance 5 inch unit? Customer service recommended buying the one with the inland chart and buying a card, but had no info where or what card to buy. This can’t be this difficult 😞
Thanks in advance for any help!

I went through this craziness when I bought my Hook Reveal 5 with the downscan transducer (not sidescan).  The maps it comes loaded with are not for coastal use.  I then bought a C-MAP Insight Pro card from Amazon (Model #M-NA-Y070.40).  The card I received was a fair bit out of date (12/2017) and you need a Windows machine to update it, so I reached out to C-MAP support (us-support@c-map.com) to see about my options.  I received the following response:

The card can be updated at https://gofreeshop.com. Simply create an account on a Windows PC and once logged in, there's a button to download updates.  If you have any issues getting the card to register or have a MacOS device, then the update can be done directly through us.

If you're a coastal hugger and not running offshore for tuna or to the deeper drop-offs, the Insight Pro is the perfect card for you - once it gets updated.

Being a nerd and very much interested in being self-supportive, I spun up a Windows Virtual Machine and attempted to update it, but the website said my card was too old to update, so I reached back out to support and they were extremely helpful:

The webstore goes off the compilation date of the card, so if it's more than 12 months old, regardless of when you bought it, it will charge you.

If you just bought it, just send me a copy of the receipt showing the date and a valid shipping address and we'll send you an updated card at N/C.

So, I did just that, showed them my Amazon receipt and gave them a shipping address and they shipped me a new card.  New cards get some number of updates (I think C-MAP releases two updates per year) and then you pay a smaller fee each update thereafter.  So, it works out just fine.

Hope that helps and I'd be glad to answer any other questions you might have since I've won this rodeo before.

Hey Dave what are you looking for in a chart? You won’t have a built in chart that shows any detail, it will all be run off a chip. The navionics+ chip will show you good contour lines. If you’re looking for the fancy chart that shows bottom with relief shading and not contour lines that’s the platinum+ chart.

So attached is a basic chart, navionics sonarchart, and then relief shading.

For me I like to keep it simple. Thanks for the responses. Really all I will use is a fish/depth finder and a topo type map that plots/shows where I am and the route I took so on foggy days I can retrace my route. :smt001. Any advice? Thanks  :smt006

The Insight Pro card I linked is just that.  It's basic vector charts with some additional info about tides and currents and port information if you ever wanted it.  I wouldn't go sidescan, personally, if all you want is a fishfinder.  You can always upgrade your transducer later if you found you wanted it.  The downscan alone is enough for me.  When I'm fishing sandy bottoms, I can see ripples on the bottom and when I'm fishing rockpiles, I can see how big the rocks are.  Good enough for me.  Just make sure you order one with charts.  The GPS Only model doesn't accept chart cards.

So, all said, I would buy mine again if I had to... the Hook Reveal 5 with US Lake Map and SplitShot tranducer.  Then, I'd buy the C-MAP Insight Pro card to put in it for coastal waters.
