When tying a stinger knot for halibut is a loop knot recommended or a hard knot such as a uni? It's been a long time since I used to tie these and can't recall.

Palomar knot has never fail me for the stinger hook. It's quick and effective!

I tie the forward hook on with a sliding snell knot so the rig is adjustable for different bait sizes.  I tie the stinger hook on with a simple improved clinch or palomar.

I've only really seen the loop knots used for pacific halibut, I think it depends on the size of the line, uni works great for everything and is stealthier then a loop but you arent able to cinch down on 80+ lb mono properly sometimes so its safer to just use a perfection loop. At that large of line you arent really worried about stealth and also for large circle hooks, if you use a loop and feed it through the correct side it will hold the hook in a way that helps prevent it slipping out of the fishies mouth.

My concern is more about the question "do I want the treble hook to swing freely or do I want it to be more stiff?"

I like my stinger to be more rigid. I think it picks up less weeds. And, I want a committed fish.

Does anyone have a favorite hook brand, size, shape? I prefer owner hooks but the local shop has a limited supply. Trying to remember if I use 2/0 or 3/0

Me three.

Plus, I too like my stinger to be more rigid.

Add my vote to palomar on the stinger.
