I fished today, despite the small craft thing.  easy launch, easy landing. some swell, some wind. used my drift chute and a light iron.
could have used no chute and a heavy iron too.

there are pockets of  much less wind on the coast when the wind goes in the gate hard and also hard around the corner into monterey bay.

I hit one of those.

was a little uptight about fishing alone with sharks.  cut my time on the water a little short probably.

since sixmhz moved away I need a reliable shark decoy fishing partner for county line rockfishing. taking applications,  .
I can only fish weekends pretty much.  eric b. send in your application!  no whiners or excuse makers please...

anyway, a lot of dinks (copper dinks, blue dinks, black dinks, gopher dinks) on a teaser fly above the jig. jig hit when tipped with gulp, but not otherwise.

I tried a couple weird irons (glow sumo, chartreuse iron man 5) for nothing. Also some big plastics. so that tells me the bite was suppressed a little, but effort would get you fish.

kept a whopper blue, a china, and a big gopher.  the blue was big, chinas taste good plus they fight hard for little guys, and gophers deserve to die, die, die!

would have been a good day to tip with squid and be more patient on the drifts.

what John means is he needs someone to help him lift his 100lb scupper up into his truck and thin out the gopher population.  damn gophers

greg, does this mean you made it to IOWA? Got a chance to blast anything yet? I sure hope so!

I actually got a second scupper pro with no rudder and am keeping it below 100 lbs this time.

you too hah... out of the 2 times i''ve used them teasers, all i really got were smaller ones that i ended up throwing back. 5-6" white scampi and swim baits on 4oz have consistently produced the larger ones for me.

Teaser do work.  The big reds will hit more than a big baits (plastics) or iron.  Downside, is that the smaller rockcod that get "No Love" from John (jmairey) or Greg (sixmhz) will grab on to it first.  Where the "Love" or "Why Can't we just get along?" or if the lights are out...How can you tell their ugly....talking about physical features of a rockcod = gophers.... HERE.

Those small rockfish make excellent ling bait.

Sometimes that teaser really gets the action going. It got me a lot of good size blues and blacks and browns
in santa cruz this year early in the season.

But once it starts and if you are not catching big blues and blacks on it, it should come off and maybe put
a big grub on there or something.

I was lazy. I should have removed it after the first couple of small fish.

Just goes to show, you have to keep thinking out there, don't get lazy.

Glad to see the progress there J.  Leave the teasers and strip squid bait for rookies and places plagued with little or finicky fish.
