Hi,

I have a chance to kayak fish Cayucos this weekend.

Any thoughts on using a Dobyns 795SB/ Cardiff 301a for targeting rock fish and lingcod?  It's from my bass fishing arsenal. ( Dobyns rod is rated 15-30lb, 1-5 oz, action med/hvy fast, 7'9")

I tried to source a ugly stik tiger to pair with my jigmaster 500, but most shops around Sacramento are out of stock for the rod.

Should i pair the jigmaster to the 795?

Thanks

It sort of depends on how deep you are fishing and how heavy. The rod is rated for casting weight and I’m assuming that you are jigging or drifting instead of casting.

The rod will work great for jigging and drifting. If you have braid on the 301 reel that will work too. Just make sure to give it a good cleaning after.

I have that rod matched with a 300 low profile reel and I have used it in the ocean. The reel starts to get outgunned with heavier weights if you are fishing deep. The rod doesn’t mind though.

Thanks for the tips ThreemoneyJ.

Yes, I'll be jigging and braid/mono leader will be on the 301 reel.

I use the same setup with a 401 cardiff, dropping anywhere from 4 to 8 oz of lead has been no problem up to 120 feet. The rod has handled everything I have thrown at it no problem. I would like to eventually pair it with a 301 tranx, but for now the cardiff does just fine. Something fun about fishing the ocean with Dobyns rods, I tend to find myself trolling halibut with my 805CB!
