kayak fishing / freediving report

well my wife and i went to otter cove and launched to go south towards hopkins. i anchored in 40 feet and did some diving for fish. lots and lots of seals it was getting kind of annoying but they sure are cute. they were biting my fins and hugging my leg. when im coming up for air it is real annoying.

not many fish due to the seals, they would be laying at the bottom before i could get down there.

i got a ling on the 2nd dive and a large olive.

my wife fished off the yak and got 3 decent sized rf out deeper.

i cruised some sand channels for halibut but they were out. lots of baby fish all over in swarms as i dived down. water on the surface was warm and the fish were down low.

if the water warms up more i think there is going to be good halibut times in monterey soon. i saw a couple of freedivers at lovers 3rd , maybe they had some luck.

after getting out i got swarmed on by the local dfg officer. he was pretty nice and i offered my fish and license so he walked to the kayak down below with me. he looked at my fish, and license and said its good.

he said he now patrols for deer season, salmon and shorefisheries and said its been really busy. i could see how frustrating it could be sometimes for these guys because it seems they have a lot on their plate.

anyhow, overall a decent day, vis was terrible att he surface but opened up to 20-30 feet below and lots of kelp. kelp beds are huge now.

next weekend, i predict a good weekend.
