Why is it always some outlandish, ridiculous "solution" coming from people who have probably never done this line of work and don't have the slightest idea of what is actually realistic. Not just in fishing. Like all forms of government. Look at our gun rights we are about to start slowly losing.

I wasn't able to contact Rob Bonta's office to let him know how stupid his bill is, but I contacted the Assemblyman of my district to ask him not to support this bill. I don't normally sign Change.org petitions because there are a bunch of non-sense out there. However, I signed this one. I'm not even an avid crabber, but I don't need a dumbass to take away my right to crab in a responsible manner. By their logic, they might as well outlaw fishing in the ocean altogether. I have heard at least three reports of kayak fishermen snagging a whale accidentally in the last 3-4 years.

Probably a pretty complicated issue... And there is always a lot of tension between industry groups and environmental organizations.

I want to try to understand it better and will read more about it. I did notice the industry is trying to represent Oceana as a for profit organization. They seem to mention that a lot in the article, I read through the link.  When I looked up a review of Oceana I do find a fairly positive description and a high percentage of proceeds applied to the causes they support.

I do admit to bring some bias to these kinds of debates: after watching chemical, oil and gas, pharma, and tobacco industry trade groups over the years - I am always very leery of any claims they make.
