I want a small handheld GPS. Nothing too fancy. I want to know where I am and how far I've gone. I know where I am most of the time but a week ago I was looking for a wounded animal and got turned around, and it was getting dark. It's amazing how easily one can get lost.
Any experience, suggestions? I looked at the Etrex20 and it seems like what I'm looking for.
If you don't know where you're headed, any road could get you there.

There are apps like Gaia GPS that turn your phone into a GPS device, no cell service needed.  Just download the maps of where you'll be.

I have two pieces of equipment for when i'm out on the trails.  A Garmin 64st so that I don't get lost and can find my way back to my vehicle or trails.  When I'm in an area with no cell service, I just added a Garmin inreach mini which allows an SOS message in the event of an emergency, but more importantly, it has text message capabilities and tracking for my family and friends to know my progress and location.  There is a cost for usage on the Garmin Inreach though.

+2 on Gaia. You can keep the phone in airplane mode conserving batteries. Great secondary device.

Was doing an early evening hike once and saw a fox which I curiously followed.  Subsequently got lost labyrinthine like as dark fell.  Decided then to take a nap and compass navigation course offered through REI outdoor.  The instructor said often when people are lost and found(sometimes croaked), they are located just a short distance from a main road or trail but didn’t even know

+3 for Gaia. You can download several different maps depending on what are doing. I have used it for years.

I think I have the etrex 20, but I seem to have misplaced it.
I just downloaded Gaia. Thanks for the tip!
