My name is Kristen Green and I am a graduate student at Moss Landing Marine Labs. You caught one of my acoustically tagged fish! This particular fish was released on October 12, 2006, and had been at large for about 10 months.

I'm not sure if the external tag was still there, but there is a number to call the labs at if you or anyone else catches more tagged fish.

Please contact me at 831-771-4479 or [email protected]. I can give you more info about the study if you would like. If you still have the transmitter I would like to get it back.

Thank you for posting!

Kristen Green

I talked to Kristen from Moss Landing Marine Lab. The fish I caught, which had a black acoustic transmitter, is one of her about 30 tagged fish. She is studying behaviour of Black rockfish. According to Kristen, the transmitter will emit signal to the corresponding acoustic receiver about every minute. My fish does not have any external tag when I caught it. The fish was lost for about 10 months. I will send Kristen the black acoustic transmitter.

By the way, it may help the researcher to release any fish with external tag, so that they can continue with their study. Also thanks to those who offered suggestions and forwarded the mail to Kristen.

A priceless good will plus some research info. What else would you expect? I wish I have not terminated one of their research subjects.

Oh well,  I hope it tasted good.  :smt005 .  It sounds like you did not notice it until it was too late because the tag was gone.  Could you have noticed the staples sooner if you were looking for them?

Sounds like you got a pretty good deal.  Having been a marine biology graduate student myself and also having been married to one, I'd say even good will is hard to spare some days.

My recollection is a little fuzzy, but I think the sonic tags we used on our study were about $200. I think the cost depended upon the battery life of the tag.  That was 2001 prices, so hopefully they are a lot cheaper.  That tag looks pretty big so it might have a battery life of may be 12+ months.  If you return the tag, they might be able to reuse it.  Its not much use to you unless you got a receiver and hydrophone.  I was offering a cool truckers cap with our halibut tagging project patch sewn on for a returned tag.  Of course, I didn't get one tag returned.

I wouldn't worry about keeping the fish at least they know that the information they collect so far was actually from that fish.  Nothing like having a shark or sea lion eating your tagged fish and messing up your fish movement data.
