That's great that they finally isolated the chemical. Hopefully WA, OR, and CA can enact measures to reduce the prevalence of said chemicals in car tires.

I just read this an hour ago. It's always a bag of mixed feelings from me when links in the chain of causality of environmental degradation are established. The scope of the problem is so unfathomably vast. Presumably every car tire has this chemical in it. To turn this around in a reasonable amount of time (reasonable being soon enough to give the Cohos a fighting chance at recovery), i.e. research, test, manufacture, and distribute tires that don't have this chemical in them, seems so out of reach. It's hard not to feel hopeless. Then again, if a solution was to ever arise, this discovery is a crucial step, and I try to remain optimistic that humanity will work toward approaching a sort of symbiosis with the natural world and its ecosystems.
