A few whale watchers had a humpback surface under them off Avila Beach.  One of the folks on the yak was filming and others nearby were also filming.  Watching the videos just sent a huge rush of envy over me.  What an experience!!

Being that close to nature sure is an experience! Can’t say that I’d be envious of the dude that ended up in the jaws of the whale, however!

Holy Crap!!

It was 2 women and fortunately they are both ok.

There is a video from one of the ladies that was on the yak.  Incredible stuff.

Oh my God!
Really one of those experiences where I'm sure all animals involved were shocked and surprised. Look at all those birds though!

A good reminder that the ocean is not to be messed with.

That's wild!  Sounds like the birds are laughing at them

Great video, but I'm not seeing the envy factor...
I don't like stuff that sucks.

I was trolling by myself at Muir a few weeks ago. Nobody around. Suddenly, a whale surfaces and goes back in swimming straight towards me. Maybe 100 yards away. The only option was to break left, as the shore was close to the right. Thankfully we missed each other.

I have not encountered any whale yet. Did the Fish finder show the whale near you?

A few weeks ago I took someone out at Navarro Beach on a flat-calm day. We went south and were fishing around some kelp when a big Gray Whale came up right behind his yak and blew... he nearly jumped off. Turns out he'd never seen a whale before! Got a great first look as it surfaced about 50 feet away right in front of him.

We see Grays around the reefs and kelp beds here all the time. They eat the same little critters as the rockfish gorge on.

If you've never been to Avila Beach, it is a super friendly launch.  You are allowed to trailer down a ramp onto the sand and load/unload right by the water.

I SUP'd Avila Bay in December and it was an amazing area.  No surprise that whales love it there because the ppl sure do also.

Scary as heck video, I've had a few close encounters over the years and always feared getting rammed like that
