Launched out of leffingwell @7:00 am to great conditions small swell wind almost non exsistent. and no fog.  I headed to Cambria Rock.   Water Clarity was pretty good as I could see ~ 15 ft down.  a lot of blues around Kept one to eat but at times I was moving just to get away from them also quite a few kelp bass mixed in with them. fishing was pretty good started a little slow and then really came around for me.  Caught quite a few blues, Gophers yellow and Blacks.  Had 2 Nice reds 19" 4 lb and a 20" 5 lb.  was definitely stoked on those could have called it day with just those two fish but I hadn't seen a ling all day short or otherwise, And I wanted one.  the wind was really picking up but I was tying off to the kelp so I was going to stick it out for a little longer and I'm  glad I did. I was fishing my way back in and and was getting pretty close to calling it when I was hit hard and got the Big head shake I was looking for.  Brought him up on my new setup I just bought last week (Kencor Graf ocean series 7' 10-30 lb w Okuma Convector CV30l reel.) got him up and he made couple runs back down taking line I could tell  right away by his head he was a keep, so after getting him back to the surface I ended the fight with Swipe from one of  EKunz's personalized Gaffs and brought him on board.  He was 27" but weighed in a nice 9 lbs.  I was totally stoked and called it a day.  on aside Note I am pretty sure I saw a pretty big WSB in the kelp.  was messin around with a pack of blues about 8' down when from out of the kelp this very large fish cruises out and stops about 12" from my jig. even though  I have never seen  a WSB in person out of Water   this sure looked like one to me. with its tail shape and light coloring.  could have easily have been 33-36".

dogpound, sounds like you cleaned up, glad you got it good.  conditions are on right now except for the wind.  the surf is as flat as can be & the water clarity is way up there.

i bet you're right about the WSB, i have a friend of a friend who caught one last year in S.S. cove around 50lbs.  i've seen a lot of birds feeding on bait lately too.

try throwin' a large silver crocodile spoon out there & see what happens...good luck.

Thanks for the tip Pj.

Your right there were a lot of birds working Bait when I was out there I had peliocans splashing down pretty close to me.   I have never really targetted WSB so didn't really know what to throw at 'em.  I 'll have to try it next time.

I haven't either but I heard that fly-lining a whole frozen squid along the edge of the kelp bed can produce. If you can get live squid = even better! Good luck and keep us posted!

Niiice! Those are the pics I like to see-its about quality not quantity-and those are quality fish!
Mooch has it right on the WSB. I go on an annual trip to fish them at the channel islands. A few years ago the WSB schools were nowhere to be found, so we were tossing plastics at the kelp edge for calicos. One guy nose hooked a live sardine on a ring hook, soaked it while the rest of us were having a great time with calicos, then BAM he's on a monster fish. Only WSB of the trip, it went 38lbs. You could just imagine it ambushing that sardine from under the canopy.

watch for the commercial squid boats parked outside by the green can. If you see them bring out the squid jigs and try to make some live.  I've had good luck with the sabiki for the smelt out there and I'm sure you'd have decent odds with that too. Nice haul by the way.
...got him in the boat he measured six foot long I was so dang impressed I had to write this song...
