I have found several older reviews of many radios but am interested in recommendations for newer radios.  I'm considering the Standard Horizon HX870, does anyone have any experience good/bad with one?

I have the HX870. Overall I like it. It has a bunch of features, which may take a while to learn...I'm still learning  :smt001 I like that it has DSC, for peace of mind. To use that feature,
you'll need to registrar it to get a DSC number ($20-$25). The only thing I don't like about it is its size. A bit too big for my liking. I attach it to the front pocket of my life jacket. It can get in the way sometimes. If I were to buy again I'll go for something smaller.

DSC-equipped VHF Radio is a game-changer for me. A few great features of a DSC-enabled radio are:

-other boaters/kayakers with DSC-enabled radios can immediately get your distress signal is one of its great features.
-you can simply flip the cover and press the distress call button during an emergency. You would not have to say anything. Pressing the emergency button will alert the coast guard of your current position and also other DSC radios in the area.

Here’s a link for more info: https://www.boatus.com/magazine/2015/december/setting-up-a-vhf-radio-with-dsc.asp

Cons:
You have to pay ($20-25/year) to register your radio using the VHF radio’s unique MMSI Number.  But I believe that the $25 or so dollars is a small price to pay for my safety.  It’s there if you need it, like an insurance policy or an additional level of safety while you are out in the big blue.

Question about DSC (Digital Selective Calling) feature.  Does it work if you are out of radio range?

Another option to consider is a lighter weight radio and a PLB.

No it doesn't. I like your idea of a small radio and PLB. PLB is on my wish list.

My good fishing buddy has both DSC radio and PLB.  The DSC radios are on the heavy side.

+1 on the registration actually being free...

Also a PLB is a better option if your true intent is to call SAR.  I carry an ACR 400 PLB

I have HX870 and an HX210... honestly I like the 210 better. Even with GPS deactivated the 870 uses way more battery than the 210 and is bulkier and more than double the cost.

I think Garmin is going to change the game when it comes to satellite nav and coms. Some of their newer stuff is looking very cool. Wish I could pick up garmin as a sponsor hahaha.
