Has anyone had any luck with halibut at OP recently? Or Salmon/RF at HMB?

I went out to HMB twice last week and had really bad luck. On 8/28 I was bottom fishing between the red and green buoys for about 8 hours and only caught 1 short ling and 2 RF. I went back the next day and fished the same areas and caught a big fat skunk. Anyone having similar experiences at HMB?

I went to HMB on 8/30 and picked up two ling's. A 36" came off a small black rockfish. Called it quits after getting the smaller 24"

Dang. Hopefully we have some better fishing days soon.

That's a nice catch! Any tips for a new kayak fisherman working without a FF? Do you generally hang around the buoys or do you move around a lot? I generally find a spot, drop in, and just drift.

Hmb kind of sucks without a FF. You have to find those drop offs. Majority of the place is sandy between the two cans. If you go further south of the red can there are some nice reefs there.

Are the reefs far from the red can? Others have also mentioned some really fishy reefs around the area but I'm not sure how far I should be going.

w/o a FF, you could tell where the reefs are in Google Maps satelite view or the following site, which I use alot (similar to Navionics)

Thank you for the map! So are the shallow, blue areas by the red buoy where the reefs are? That does seem like the area I drifted over when I caught the ling last week.

Same. I went out to HMB this past weekend and could hardly get a bite, even with shrimp flies. Other guys I saw that day reported the same :(

download the navionics iphone app.  it's like 10 bucks and it works while you're kayaking just don't drop your phone in the water.    :smt005

i use it sometimes since I don't have the navionics chip in my lowrance ff

Yep.  But you need to be careful when fishing on top of the reefs in HMB.  If the tide is right, it can get really shallow between sets, and you could end up flipping.  Same with King's Rock... looks glassy calm and you're drifting along the north reef then out of nowhere, you end up too close to King's and it breaks.  Also, HMB is HEAVILY pressured... so you'll have to put your time in to find a good hole.

I heard OP has been super slow as well.  But I haven't been out in weeks to confirm anything... just ear hustlin' on the interwebs.
