Caught my PB kelp greenling yesterday on a fast-fall jig! It measured 17 inches flat, apparently the world record is 17 3/4 inches. Other than that I trolled for salmon for a few hours but no bites.

Nice catch! And thanks for the report. I’m curious if the air was smoky and if you had any issues accessing the beach (closures or any warning signs)?

Although many people would strongly discourage going out to Rockaway and Linda Mar (and I wouldn't disagree with them), technically speaking these beaches are open to the public and you aren't breaking any laws by launching your kayak. The beaches were only closed over the weekend. The Bay Area's micro climate zones are evident here; air quality is not good in Pacifica but surprisingly OK in Half Moon Bay.

Nice catch Ken! I don't think Pacifica rockfish tastes shitty and you're catching way more variety than I ever had in that area.

Yep it was open when I went, no signs. Also it was mostly just foggy yesterday, with some onshore breeze with the marine layer. Air quality was much better than in the bay.

Nice catch.   :smt001

Never knew there was a record for greenling based on length.

Here's a few nice ones:

The CDFW pages have the record listed by weight. - Here is a quote from WDFW:

"Kelp greenling can grow up to 53 cm (21 in) in length, and 2.1 kg (4.6 lbs) in weight. Maximum age is 18 years old (Northern SE Alaska) and 25 years old (Oregon)"

And our own AOTY board shows the largest posted here to be an 18.5"er caught by some guy named Abking!  :smt003

Eksblenny - I'm assuming you're referring to the water quality down there?

We live one hill over from Linda Mar, and the smoke smell really changes a lot during the day. It all depends on the wind. Thanks for the info!
