I'm in the market for a used Hobie TI and was wondering if there is anything I need to be aware of when purchasing a used one.

I'm knowledgable about standard checks in purchasing a used Hobie pedal kayak as I've had mine for a few years, but wanted to see if there is anything particular about a TI that I should be inspecting for or be careful about.

Maybe common stress points on the mast/sail/amas/etc?

Also can you transport a TI upside down on a roof rack?  It seems like most pictures online I see are people who are using cradles and it's right side up and was wondering if there is an issue with just putting it upside down on the racks (with padding).

Thanks

I found this resource useful: https://slhobie.com.au/info/faq/771-hobie-island-maintenance-guide . In particular I saw reports about Mast Receiver Set Screw Bolts (I *think* they've fixed them in last gen. TI)

I personally had problem with center board (2015 TI, by that time it was not used much at all). See http://www.norcalkayakanglers.com/index.php?topic=92211.msg1043152#msg1043152 .

Regarding transport - I used to cartop AI (prev. gen), and that was doable, but many reports about latest gen AI were saying it became much-much more difficult. And TI is much bigger.

Thanks for that info.

Yeah the TI does seem like a whole new beast compared to a regular kayak.

I'm thinking it would take maybe a t-bar connected to the hitch to give one more support for the TI.  The weight limit is within my rack's limit.

I probably wouldn't buy one if I couldn't car top it, but we shall see.

You maybe better off purchasing a Revo 11 for the second seat?

Mainly I want to learn to sail.

Also I have 2 kayaks but it's hard to get someone to take the other one out as my friends are sort of willing to go but don't know enough to be able to actually fish by themselves.

I figure it would be easier and more fun to be on the same kayak together.

Newer (2016+, I believe) use a 5/16" set screw, and that should not be a problem. Older models use a 1/4" set screw, and that has been reported to be an issue on TIs. If you get one that has the 1/4 set screw, you should check it as part of your routine maintenance:

https://www.hobie.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=71&t=66542

There are reports on the Hobie forum of that set screw (the older 1/4" ones) breaking.
