I am considering changing my downrigger line from wire to braid. Any suggestions appreciated. I pull a 15lb ball up to 220 ft on occasion fishing for salmon deep in the monterey bay.

Thanks,

Alex

I'm running Scotty 200 lb braid on my 1050 downrigger and very happy with it.  Cuts through the water without the humming that wire gives off.

Well worth it. Easy to cut in case of any emergencies and it's simple to add another terminal connector if setup breaks (vs crimping). I used 12#/15# balls w/out a snubber with no issues -- just don't drop it too fast and stop abruptly.

Had a friend tell me a story where they were trolling off his dads sailboat with heavy duty wire on the downrigger ball. A whale got wrapped in it, the entire sail boat was getting dragged under, finally snapped and the boat rocked back pretty hard. After hearing that, I decided not to run wire. As I have a small aluminum boat. Anyways, I run 150lb braid and it works great. No noise when trolling

Me too, but looks like the PowerPro came out ones too.
I will go with the largest diameter (250lb) for the boats though. Easier on your hands while you're working.

I believe myself and a friend bumped into a whale with our downrigger. Had the line pull down as if we hit bottom and were actually about 75 ft from it. Looked at the fish finder and were metering a huge mass. Lots of whales in the area.

you guys run 15# balls on the yak?

Holy crap, I run 12s on my boat and it seems plenty. Used to run 8s on my AI.
How much blow back do you get?
I know at 35otw I'm actually in 32 deep @ 3mph, 45 is also 42, 55 is 51

Running 200 lb scotty braid, use a snubber so im rarely handling the braid
