If strength is the issue, then try doing at least 25 push ups everyday (50 to 100 are better). if technique for car topping is the issue, I found my way is effective as a solo kayaker; which is how most do it.  I car top my Kayak on top of my sequoia. (Bigger than a CRV) I have Malone pads that i strap to the roof rack.  My method is to load from the back of the vehicle by placing the stern on a beach towel about five feet away from the back of the car, lift the bow up and over my head, pivot the kayak so the bow is in line with the center of the back of the vehicle and rest it on the back of the car (above the roof of the car) (I use a bath mat to rest it on).  I then walk to the stern and carefully pick it up while pushing it straight forward so the the bow moves onto the roof rack.  Once I get the entire kayak on the roof I strap it down and head to my location.  I reverse the process to take the kayak off of the roof.  One great thing about the kayak community is many times, someone at the launch is willing to offer a helping hand (loading and unloading.

Good luck and don't give up.

this is the way I've been loading kayaks since 1995. It is actually better than two people if the car roof is tall (I've always had to load on trucks). I found that some rollers on therear crossbar and a cradle on the front corossbar work well for this method. But, I'm using a kayak from 2005 that is almost 15ft long with a relatively narrow hull too.

my kayak is 62lbs, 11 feet long, and  33 inches wide and the method works well.  I know there are products and hacks out there (youtube search) that makes setting the bow on the back of your vehicle a little easier by aligning and guiding the bow prior to sliding it up on the roof.

Another personal "trick" I learned with experience is I am able to balance my kayak on my head and load it without setting it down on the ground.  This only works as I am preparing to load the kayak on my car when I am at home because I have "J'" bars mounted in my garage and I am able slide the kayak off the bars onto my head.  :smt044

I poked around on Youtube and found a pretty slick method:
...

I car topped my AI for a year, and this trick of loading/unloading from the side is the way to go IMHO. You can use this guy's strap method but there are lots of other ways to prevent scratching your car--my method is to drive a 2004 CRV with 250k+ miles on it, so I don't care about scratches...

Btw, I eventually got a trailer, mostly due to decreased setup/cleanup time, as compared to car topping, not due to the difficulty of getting my beast of a kayak* onto the top of the car. The trailer is great, but I do miss not having to deal with power boaters at the dock. While 95% of the powerboaters are great, about 5% of them are, well, not-so-great.

These are all really helpful! I sure do like that Hullavator!  Sweet!!!  Do you know if that requires special cross bars, or does it fit on existing CRV crossbars?

I really want to get out (Isolation has gone on way too long), and especially out on the water while the weather is so gorgeous. I'm in the Auburn area, so if anybody is interested in a kayaking day trip to a nearby lake, I'll bring the food! I know it's a lot to ask, but I would need help in either loading my Hobie Quest onto my vehicle for the first time, or onto yours.

You can fish... I'll goof off paddling, swimming, and sunning.  :smt001

Depends on which cross bars you have.  Many of the shops that sell them will also help you install on your vehicle.
