Has anyone ever tried dropping crab pots at Santa Cruz area?  Wondering if it is worth the effort.

I believe they are there, but you have to go very deep, which means far offshore, and pull lots of rope. I think people have done it from a kayak, but it would not be easy...

I have dropped those square cages in about 80 feet before from a kayak. I had one pot full of red rock crabs and one that was open and bait cage empty when I got back.. Not sure what happened but I don't believe it was a seal as the thing was not bent at all and the other gent in the launch with me on a zodiak had a limit of dungies for the one cage he soaked..   I have also heard that it is productive further out around the 200 and 300 mark.

A few years ago I went out from the harbor and dropped 6 pots spread over about a half mile and caught exactly 1 dungie, keeper at least, and 1 rock crab. Worst spot ever for me. I have also heard that you need to go really deep to get them there.

I went out on Sunday and got 2 keeper dungies in one pot in SC without dropping in 200 FOW. It's possible.
